You Know You're Communicating Clearly... So Why Aren't Stakeholders Excited About Your Research?

You've got a handle on the basics of knowledge mobilization (KMb).

You can find your way around a high-level KMb framework, and you're familiar with the principles of Plain Language.

But somehow the knowledge products you create keep falling short of what you envision. They don't quite bridge the gap between you and the stakeholders you need to influence so you can move your research forward and drive change.

You're ready to take your KMb practice to the next level so you can express your research with the clarity, creativity, and polish it takes to stand out in today's noisy world.

If You’re Disappointed
in the Results of your KMb Efforts, You’re Not Alone

It takes a bunch of multidimensional skills to create persuasive communication products,
and no one is born with all of them. Nor can you just “pick them up” through your daily workflow.

Like fine woodwork or weaving, sharing research with nonexperts is a craft, and
the best way to learn it is through hands-on experience, working with an expert craftsperson.

That’s why most courses in knowledge mobilization, which tend to emphasize content over practice,
can leave you feeling like you know more than you did before but can’t really do more.

Fresh Inspiration and Personal Feedback to Increase Your Impact

Group coaching flips conventional training on its head.

Rather than learning about frameworks and theories and then trying to apply those to your situation (hoping they'll fit!), you'll focus on YOUR research and YOUR KMb goals.

With the other participants in the program, you'll co-create a learning journey to achieve your personal objectives. You'll gain access to the specific strategies and tools you need to bring your research to life for your audience and get their buy-in.

You'll also have ample opportunity to get feedback on work-in-progress, both from others in the program and from your program coach, Dr. Dawn Henwood.

TESTIMONIALS

What It's Like to Learn with Dawn

The comments below relate to another group coaching program, which has been offered as Communicating with Government and Industry and as Communication for Health Research & Innovation.

  • "I can't say enough how above and beyond this program went beyond my expectations. I have taken some knowledge translation courses, but what I really liked was how Dawn had everything organized in terms of different formats--tips and tricks for blogs, infographics, presentations, you name it.

The part I really liked was the personalized feedback. Dawn was very approachable and got to know what all our projects were, and she has a ton of experience, so she can relate to different things.

If someone is looking for a program to make your research live, I would absolutely recommend this."

    Lyne Ouellet

     PhD student and Research Coordinator

  • "I decided to take the program because I wanted to get more skilled at knowledge translation. I think that's an important skill to have at any point in your career, but I thought the earlier the better.

I was impressed by how much we learned just from the first half-day session. It was also great to get personalized comments about my work. Dawn pointed out some things that were directly related to my presentations so that I could improve on them right away.

The experience was amazing. I feel much more confident, and I feel like I have more skills to do presentations to people who aren't in academia."

    Sandrine Poulin

    MA/PhD student in Experimental Psychology

  • "I wanted to learn how to identify my audience and select my approach. The course was great, and it was really nicely laid out. I've employed some of the methods I learned when I delivered two conference presentations to people who are not from my research area.

I also produced my first podcast episode during the program and now I'm thinking of doing a second episode. I have been living all my life as a student, but now it's time to give that knowledge back to society."

    Kaushalya Rathnayake

    PhD student in Biology

  • "I took the course because I'm trying to decide if I want to do academia or go the industry route. I get lots of coaching on how to pitch conference abstracts and how to write conference talks, but those don't really apply outside of academia.

The course has impacted even my academic writing. It's helped me write more clearly and concisely, and I'm more conscious of my word choices."

    Narissa Byers

    PhD student in Experimental Psychology

How You'll Learn

Get ready to dive into six weeks of collaborative learning with other knowledge mobilizers who share your passion for sharing research to drive change. To allow for plenty of personal feedback, we keep the coaching group small: no more than 12 people total.

Each week, we'll meet on Zoom for a 90-minute live session, which will be recorded and made available to you.

In between live sessions, you'll have access to Dawn by email. Feel free to ask Dawn questions about topics covered during the live sessions or to ask her for quick feedback on a draft. Over the course of the program, Dawn will also hold two office hours, during which she'll be available for 15-minute personal coaching sessions.

Throughout the six weeks, you'll also have access to all the online modules in the self-paced course, Creative Research Translation. These cover core principles for KMb communication as well as recommended practices for creating grant applications, blog articles, training materials, infographics, videos, and presentations.

Schedule

Week 1

Kick-off, including self-assessment & goal-setting for the program. Information gathered through this discussion will shape the mini training sessions for the following weeks.

Weeks 2 through 5

Each 90-minute online session includes:

  • Brief check-in on work-in-progress
  • Mini training (20 to 30 minutes) on a theme tailored to the group's needs and interests
  • Open Q&A and sharing of work-in-progress; participants who share work will receive feedback from other participants and from Dawn
  • Closing reflection and personal goal-setting for the next week

Week 6

KMb Showcase. You'll share the knowledge product you've been working on and reflect on what you've learned through the program. During the online session, you'll receive brief feedback from other participants and from Dawn. Following the Showcase, you'll receive additional feedback from Dawn (a short video and written comments).

YOUR PROGRAM COACH

Hi, I’m Dr. Dawn Henwood!

I help research teams make their findings heard.

When I first stepped from academia into the corporate world, I entered straight into the boardroom of a Big Four consulting firm, where I found myself pitching senior leaders.

I felt like a deer in headlights.

As a professor, I was used to communicating with captive audiences, either students in the classroom or other scholars reading academic journals.

Suddenly, I could no longer take my authority as an “expert” for granted. I had to learn how to grab my audience’s attention, earn their trust, and motivate them to take action.

Like a stranger in a strange land, I had to learn a new language and culture. That also meant unlearning some of the academic habits I’d spent years mastering.

Fortunately, I brought to the business world a background in literary and cultural studies, persuasive communication, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL). This toolkit enabled me to adapt and thrive in various contexts, in both the private and public sectors.

Now I use this same toolkit, expanded through years of experience, to enable research teams to find their “business” voice, connect with stakeholders at a deep level, and drive change.

What Our Clients Are Saying

Grab Your Seat
  • "The way Dawn taught us to outline our thoughts and to break down how we'd want to present our research topic really helped me to make my point concise and straightforward.

I'm so used to talking to my professors or to my fellow classmates about research. After the workshop, I feel more aware of how I write and speak to successfully reach out to people outside of the academe."

    Zyrene Estallo

    Research-Track student, Master's in Education

  • “We engaged Dawn and the team of Clarity Studio to provide coaching and support to new Stiletto team members as we refined our focus on productization and process improvement as a key priority for 2021. Dawn assisted our team in putting process into action and getting the results we were looking for to streamline our internal process.

We were thrilled with our experience with Dawn and Clarity Studio and highly recommend them for their ability to easily mesh with a team, to become an extension of that team and assist where and when needed the most. Clarity Studio takes a flexible, positive approach, which was a key factor in the success of this work."

    Laura O'Blenis

    CEO of Stiletto

  • “Dawn took time to individually look at our pitch deck and our one-pager and offer substantial and insightful comments.... It was 10X more than we had bargained for. Dawn brings this wealth of knowledge and experience that is unparalleled. Usually, the feedback we get is a mile wide and an inch thick. With Dawn, it's a mile wide and a mile deep.”

    Harrison Smith

    DearLife

  • “I was working on a grant application and was up against a tight timeline. Dawn helped to clarify my value proposition and express the great progress my company had made, using language that government officials (people without a health care background) could understand.

When my timeline changed, Dawn was flexible and adaptable, and we came up with a Plan B that worked. She helped create a logical structure for the document, which enabled me to focus on the technical details and the company story. Since working with Dawn, I feel I can explain my innovation a lot more clearly to someone who’s not in health care, and I’m able to tell the story behind the product in a way I hadn’t thought of before.”
